An epic(?) quest into costuming, violin, and fantasy.

Me: it takes about 10 years of practicing violin to reach the point where you could be professional
Them: that’s ridiculous, I’ve seen video of 15 year olds who are phenomenal
Me: 🙃 guess how old they were when they started lessons, chump

(I’m not irritated by random gaming acquaintance not knowing the absolutely bonkers things people do to make their children into prodigies, I am extremely annoyed when I’m asked a question bc they know I know about whatever subject and then they fucking argue with me about my answer)

(Also, fine, this is a fantasy setting full of magic, your character can be instantly good bc magic, I guess. If you’re boring :/)

Man, like. Sorry you didn’t get the answer you wanted, I guess, but I think that you could make your bard’s background more interesting using, like, a little realism?

  • Young kids who are phenomenally talented at music and are on a pre-professional path before they’ve hit double digits are often homeschooled or at a specialized school that allows for the kids to spend 6-8 hours a day practicing music. Was your bard apprenticed at a young age? Did they attend some sort of training academy? Instant bonds! (Sure, there are a few people in the world who just pick up skills really quickly for whatever reason, so I guess you could just say ‘the god of music blessed my character’ but I’m a weirdo who likes my blessings to also be curses :/)
  • If your bard is an adult who’s recently picked up their instrument, the lack of mastery can be used as an explanation for when your character whiffs on a super basic spell (because I think “bc lol you rolled bad” doesn’t enhance the story at all, because I’m a nerd)
  • Oh, your bard has new spells because XP number go up? What if your bard has made a recent upgrade to their instrument? Spent some time hanging out with the tavern’s musician and learned a few new tricks?
